Introduction | PF Balance Check | Via SMS | Via EPFO Website | Via UMANG App | Via Missed Call | Without UAN | Inoperative EPF | Important Points | Conclusion

An Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is funded by contributions from both employer and employee equally. Both make equal contributions to the EPF every month. The contribution rate is 12% of the employee’s basic salary and dearness allowance. The rate of interest earned on the Employee Provident Fund is 8.10% per annum.

The employee may withdraw the money when they retire or if they discontinue working with their current employer.

The EPF was created by the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) of India, which comes under the Labour and Employment Ministry and was launched in 1951.

All subscribers to the EPF can access their accounts online and carry out functions such as withdrawal and checking the balance.

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit number assigned to them and is required to access the EFPO portal. The UAN number doesn’t change even if the employee switches jobs and the employer provides the UAN. Alternatively, you can log in to the UAN portal with your member ID and find the UAN.

1. PF Balance Check By Sending An SMS

Any EFPO member can now simply proceed and check the EPF balance by sending an SMS to 7738299899. The contribution details will also be visible when using this method. The SMS format to be used is  ‘EPFOHO UAN ENG.’

To break it down, substitute UAN with the allotted UAN number, and if the chosen language is English, then type’ ENG; and send the message as ‘EPFOHO 123456 ENG’. The first three letters of the language are the code to be used.

Currently, the SMS facility supports the below languages:

  • Hindi –  HIN
  • English – ENG
  • Marathi – MAR
  • Bengali – BEN
  • Gujrati – GUJ
  • Punjabi – PUN
  • Kannada – KAN
  • Telugu – TEL
  • Tamil – TAM
  • Malayalam – MAL

The SMS facility is available if the UAN is active and is linked to the bank account, Aadhar and PAN. Otherwise, the subscriber must complete the KYC process before utilising the SMS facility to know the balance.

EFPO patrons can also check their EPF balance on the mobile with the help of the official Employee Provident Fund app named UMANG. With this app, subscribers can check for any information related to their accounts even while on the move. It is available on the Apple App Store and the Android Play Store.

For accessing the EPF account through the app, the EFPO member is required to register the mobile number linked to the UAN.

4. EPF Account Balance Check Via a Missed Call

Another easy method for checking the EPF balance would be by giving a missed call to  “011-22901406”. Before proceeding to call the number, the EPFO member must be aware of the following:

  • The UAN number of the Employee Provident Fund member should be active.
  • Only if the  UAN number of the EPFO member is linked to the mobile number can the beneficiary give the missed call from the registered mobile number.
  • The UAN should be linked to all relevant documents, such as the bank account, Aadhaar and the PAN.

5. Checking EPF Balance Without A UAN

If you don’t remember your UAN at the moment, you can still verify your EPF balance. For checking the EPF balance details without UAN, you may do the following:

1st Step: Open up the EPFO webpage at epfindia.gov.in.

2nd Step: Select the option, “Click Or tap here for your EPF Balance”.

3rd Step: This will take you to the services page. Now select “Member Balance Information” from the drop-down menu.

4th Step: Proceed to enter your PF Account Number, name as on record, and the registered mobile number.

5th Step: Click on the “Submit” button, and your PF balance will be displayed.

6. Checking EPF Account Balance For Inoperative EPF Accounts

Prior to the notification dated  November 2016 issued by the Government of India, dormant EPF accounts are no longer to be listed as inoperative. Instead, they will continue to accrue interest as active accounts do. The EFPO had stopped paying interest to dormant EPF accounts since 2011.

Communication gaps between previous and the current employers often contribute to the situation. Should such a scenario arise, when an employee is unable to trace the details of old inoperative accounts, the individual can contact the EPFO helpdesk to get any EPF balance in the unused accounts transferred to a currently active account.

Only members with active UAN numbers and those who have registered themselves on the UAN member website may check the details of their Employee Provident Fund balance on it.

The Passbook will be accessible for viewing only after 6 hours have elapsed since registering on the UAN Member Portal.

Similarly, beneficiaries who have effected any changes on the UAN website have to wait 6 hours before the changes can reflect on the website.

Conclusion

Keeping a regular eye on the savings on your EPF balance can help you to plan and manage your account in an organised way for use during any unforeseen events.

With the well-designed EPFO website and other options such as the UMANG app along with the option of checking the balance by SMS and phone, it has become easy to track the EPF records with all the information available at the fingertips of the beneficiary.
