Whenever you are measuring how developed and improved a certain place is, you take into account the pace of infrastructure development. This is when you need to gauge the rural connectivity and also the way the roads are made, how well connected they are, and how are they maintained. This is exactly where the Bihar government needs to work hard. Even as per the Rural Works Department Bihar, the state lags behind badly as it has very dismal rural connectivity.

Here, let us see more details about the rural works department in Bihar and how you can work on it.

The Purpose Of Rural Works Department Bihar

The key job of this department is to list down the different construction activities on roads and also take care of the maintenance of the rural roads in the state. There is a lot of work and catching up that needs to be done as far as road network development is concerned.

The overall task of construction of roads along with their subsequent maintenance is huge. Along with the construction of roads, one has to take into account the need to carry out real-time rectification interventions as well. The rural works department Bihar seems to be lagging on several fronts in this matter.

The Development Of Road Networks

In the state core network, 1,29,209 habitations were identified. The Bihar department has only been able to connect 68,174 habitations. Of these habitations, only 45,672 of them are covered under the centrally sponsored flagship scheme and the Pradhan Mantri gram Sadak yojana. The rest of them fall under the different state schemes, mostly the supplementary flagship schemes which are sponsored by the state.

So, this is an indicator of just how much work remains to be done. It is very important to pay heed to the parts that are still looking to be developed and one needs to work accordingly.

The Rural Works Development Schemes

Bihar RWD is going to be responsible for making and maintaining the different roads. They also have several schemes for the sake of making the roads. Some of them are as follows.

  • The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana
  • Mukhyamantri Gram Sadak Yojana
  • Gramin Tola Sampark Nischay Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)

This is a government scheme and the objective is to offer connectivity to all the habitations that fall under it. It will use the best well-designed roads.

Before it was a scheme by Central Government and was wholly sponsored by them. Later, the funds were shared in the ratio of 60:40. This division is to be done between the centre and the state respectively.

The Gramin Tola Sampark Nischay Yojana

This scheme is made for connecting areas with a population of 100 to 249. The areas covered are the ones that are not mapped under either central or state core networks. The Saat Nischay Program is also a part of this scheme itself.

The Chief Minister Gram Sampark Yojana

The Bihar government has launched this scheme in 2013 to connect 27 non-IAP districts. The idea is to connect all-weather roads to these districts where there is a population of more than 250 in rural areas. This scheme is going to cover construction as well as the improvement of roads. It will span a net length of 28,075 km. The net expenses that will be incurred are going to be close to 19,652 crores. The state government is funding this whole program.
